United Parcel Service IncThe United States paid out $49.1 billion in tariff refunds in June, almost twice the $23.6 billion it collected in tariff revenue that month. Nearly all of the refunds stem from paybacks of blanket tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which the Supreme Court struck down in February. A refund portal launched in late April, with May refunds at about $20 billion before the sharp June increase. The government estimates total IEEPA tariff refunds at around $166 billion, with roughly $70 billion paid so far, and additional phases of the program are expected to bring more refunds in the coming months. The refunds are draining government coffers, contributing to a $1.4 trillion budget deficit for the first nine months of the fiscal year, already larger than all of fiscal 2025.
