The New York Times reported that US Treasury Secretary Bessent, during his visit to Japan in May, expressed dissatisfaction with the Takaichi administration's economic policies for over two hours at a dinner with Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki. Bessent felt that the yen's depreciation had gone too far, urged the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates, and questioned the lack of independence of the central bank. The dinner was held on May 11, and the following day, May 12, he also met with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae.
