ViaSat IncViasat demonstrated the first integrated satellite voice call in a vehicle using its L-band satellite network, a key technology milestone.
Viasat has demonstrated the first satellite voice call fully integrated into a vehicle's infotainment system, using a BMW iX3 during the 5G Automotive Association Meeting Week in Munich. The demonstration utilized Qualcomm's Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF Gen 2 solution, the Fraunhofer IIS NESC AI voice codec, and the NB-IoT protocol over Viasat's L-band satellite network, with eSIM capabilities from Cubic³. This integration allows voice calls to be initiated and managed directly through the BMW Group vehicle interface, aiming to provide reliable connectivity for emergency assistance and critical safety applications beyond cellular coverage. Viasat, BMW Group, Cubic³, and Fraunhofer IIS are all members of the 5GAA, which promotes scalable connectivity solutions for road users.
