Visa Inc. Class AVisa is betting on stablecoins for AI micropayments, a new product/technology initiative.
Visa is betting on stablecoins to enable AI agents to handle micropayments. The company envisions a future where AI agents conduct thousands of small transactions, often under one dollar, using stablecoins on blockchain rails, while humans continue using credit cards for larger purchases. Visa highlighted that X402, a protocol originally created by Coinbase and now stewarded by the Linux Foundation, has already processed 109.6 million transactions from AI agents with $15 million in volume since launching in mid-2025. The firm argues that AI cannot use cash and will avoid credit card or wire fees, making near-free stablecoin transactions the natural choice for machine-to-machine payments.
