Volkswagen AGRestructuring plan could cut up to 140,000 jobs and close plants, indicating severe cost pressures and potential operational disruption.
Volkswagen's employee representative body has announced it will hold extraordinary employee meetings in August, inviting CEO Oliver Blume to explain a restructuring plan that could involve up to 140,000 job cuts. Blume will attend meetings at the Wolfsburg headquarters on August 25, and at the Emden and Zwickau plants on August 26. The Emden and Zwickau plants are two of four factories that could be closed if no alternative solutions are found. Blume has indicated that, in addition to the ongoing reduction of 50,000 jobs, a further 50,000 positions could be cut to enhance cost competitiveness. The employee representative body says that if plant closures occur after 2030, an additional 40,000 jobs would be at risk. A Volkswagen spokesperson declined to comment on the scale of job cuts, stating that no agreements have been reached at this time.
