Alphabet Inc Class CAlphabet raised its 2026 capex forecast to $195-$205 billion, intensifying AI spending concerns despite beating Q2 earnings estimates.

Wall Street closed sharply lower on Thursday, with all three major benchmarks ending in the red as surging oil prices, escalating Middle East tensions, and concerns over rising artificial intelligence spending dampened investor confidence. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 506.93 points, or 1%, to close at 51,711.65, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 553.21 points, or 2.2%, to 25,137.69, and the S&P 500 slid 90.66 points, or 1.2%, to 7,408.30. Brent crude settled above $100 a barrel for the first time since May, rising 7% to $100.69, after Yemen's Houthi militants claimed attacks on two Saudi oil tankers and President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iranian infrastructure. Alphabet shares weighed on the market after the company raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $195-$205 billion from $180-$190 billion, intensifying concerns about mounting AI spending despite reporting June-quarter earnings of $9.11 per share that widely surpassed estimates. Communications services and consumer discretionary stocks led the decline, with the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR falling 5.2% and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR dropping 5.1%, while the CBOE Volatility Index jumped 12.4% to 18.70.
