Alphabet Inc Class CWaymo's custom chip reduces reliance on Nvidia and AMD, enhancing its autonomous driving tech.
Alphabet's Waymo has built a custom application-specific integrated circuit for its robotaxis that is already in production in its latest generation, reducing its reliance on Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices. The chip speeds up sensor data processing and the AI models its vehicles use to read and respond to their surroundings, and runs above 1,000 TOPS, putting it level with Nvidia's latest autonomous driving systems on that measure. It is made on Taiwan Semiconductor's 5-nanometer process. Waymo's fleet has largely been Jaguar vehicles retrofitted with autonomous technology, but the robotaxi it launched with Geely's Zeekr is now being fitted with the new chip. Waymo said the shift toward purpose-built vehicles may cut costs while giving riders more space.
