Uber Technologies shares fell 4% on Friday after a Financial Times report revealed that Alphabet's Waymo is considering terminating its partnership with the ride-hailing giant. Waymo is holding internal discussions about ending current agreements that cover joint operations in Austin and Atlanta. Uber confirmed that Waymo has notified them of plans to enter those markets independently by January 2028, when the contract allows such a move. The relationship has deteriorated since 2023 as the two companies increasingly compete directly, including lobbying for robotaxi legislation favoring their own business models. A split would force Uber to rethink its autonomous vehicle strategy and could spark a head-to-head robotaxi battle.
