Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi, India today (Sept. 12) to attend the 18th BRICS Summit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit is being held from Sept. 12 to 13, and Xi Jinping will join leaders of member countries in charting new directions to promote higher-quality BRICS cooperation, pool the strength of Global South countries, and provide stability and positive momentum for a world undergoing major changes. Balew Demissie, a senior advisor at the Ethiopian Policy Studies Institute, told Xinhua News Agency that BRICS is playing an increasingly important role in promoting true multilateralism and upholding international rules, pushing for a more balanced, inclusive and representative global order. Demissie stressed that BRICS does not aim to replace existing international institutions, but seeks to strengthen the principles of dialogue, sovereign equality, mutual respect and international cooperation. He noted that BRICS better represents and responds to the interests of Global South countries, and that its expanded membership also helps emerging economies gain a greater voice in global decision-making, especially in trade, development, finance, climate change, peace and security.
