Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi, India, on Saturday to attend the BRICS leaders' summit and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is Xi Jinping's first trip to India in seven years, and it comes as China and India are cautiously trying to restore relations after ties were badly damaged by a military clash along their disputed Himalayan border in 2020, which killed 20 Indian soldiers and 4 Chinese soldiers. The meeting between Xi Jinping and Modi, scheduled for Saturday evening, will be the third between the two in three years, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday. The spokesperson said China is willing to work with India, viewing the relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective, properly managing differences, and being good neighbors and friends as well as mutually supportive partners. BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This summit is being held amid geopolitical tensions arising from the war between the United States and Israel with Iran, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the impact these wars are having on energy, trade, and transportation worldwide.
