Credit card payment processor Zentoshin has received a bankruptcy commencement order, leaving affiliated restaurants across Japan unable to process card payments and struggling to collect sales proceeds. The number of affiliated merchants, primarily small and medium-sized restaurants, reached 200,000 as of 2018, and the full extent of the impact remains unclear. At a restaurant in Osaka's Minami district, the loss of customers without cash has been felt, and payments from Zentoshin have ceased since the 7th. A sushi restaurant in Kitashinchi says it will take about a month to introduce a new payment service, while a Western-style restaurant in Utsunomiya reports no prospect of receiving payments for transactions from July onward. Meanwhile, an izakaya in Yurakucho was able to use QR code payments, limiting the impact. Zentoshin had provided a service where it advanced sales proceeds to merchants and made upfront payments to card companies, but on the 6th it filed for voluntary bankruptcy with the Osaka District Court and received a bankruptcy commencement order.
