Skyworks and Qorvo Shares Jump as Merger Nears Final Approval

Skyworks Solutions and Qorvo shares surged on Tuesday as the proposed merger between the two semiconductor companies nears completion, with Qorvo climbing 7% and Skyworks soaring 10%. Skyworks CEO Philip Brace said at a Goldman Sachs conference last week that the company is "very confident that we're going to close this calendar year" and is preparing to close in its fiscal year, which ends on September 30. The two companies have already cleared a review by U.S. antitrust regulators, and the deal is in the final phase of review by China's State Administration for Market Regulation, the last hurdle before the merger can close. Brace said the combination offers both a scale play and a diversification play, with roughly $500M of synergies, a mobile business of about $5.5B and a nonmobile business of $2.5B to $2.6B, while also opening new markets such as the defense industry. Skyworks and Qorvo first announced the proposed merger in October 2025.

Chip Stocks Slide as AI Leaders Urge Slowdown in Frontier Model Development

Penguin Solutions, Kulicke and Soffa, and Qorvo shares fell sharply after the chief executives of Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX publicly united to call for a deliberate slowdown in the development of frontier AI models over escalating safety risks. According to CNBC, the sell-off was triggered by an essay published over the weekend by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who urged a more cautious approach to frontier model advancement and called for independent safety monitoring, a proposal quickly endorsed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Penguin Solutions fell 7.2%, Kulicke and Soffa dropped 6.3%, and Qorvo declined 6.7% as the warnings sparked concern over the sustainability of the heavy capital spending that has driven tech valuations higher. Citigroup shifted to a neutral stance on broader equity risk, cautioning that any institutional pause or deceleration in AI deployments could temper corporate earnings growth and pressure chipmakers reliant on rapid infrastructure expansion. Penguin Solutions is up 135% since the beginning of the year, but at $47.60 per share it remains 41.5% below its 52-week high of $81.39 from July 2026.

Skyworks Beats Q3 Estimates, Guides Q4, Advances Qorvo Deal

Skyworks Solutions reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 non-GAAP earnings of $1.08 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 4.85%, though earnings declined 18.8% year over year from $1.33. Revenues of $934.8 million fell 3.1% year over year but topped the consensus mark by 1.38%, driven by healthy mobile demand and continued Broad Markets growth, with automotive and data center delivering double-digit gains. Broad Markets generated approximately $403 million in revenues, rising 8% year over year and accounting for 43% of total sales, while AI data center was the fastest-growing operation, expanding at a rate above the 50% annual growth outlook. Mobile contributed 57% of total revenues, with the largest customer generating approximately 57% of total revenues, and management maintained its expectation for roughly flat blended mobile content this year. Synopsys to discontinue chip fab manufacturing control software in pivot to AI design

Synopsys plans to discontinue a suite of manufacturing process control software used by semiconductor manufacturers worldwide and reallocate resources to higher-margin business like AI design, Reuters reported citing sources. The company informed more than 10 chipmakers, including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Kioxia and Qorvo, in April and May about the end-of-life decision for the products, which include the Equipment Engineering System and Fault Detection and Classification software. Synopsys will stop releasing new versions and only provide support under existing contracts, and has already laid off several dozen employees linked to the products. A Samsung spokesperson confirmed the decision and said the company had established compatible alternatives with no negative impact on production. The move is part of a broader shift to reduce support obligations and focus engineers on higher-margin AI design products following Synopsys' $35 billion acquisition of Ansys in 2025.
