Hang Seng Index rises 0.2% for fourth straight gain, Tech Index buckles with 1.3% drop
In Hong Kong on the 30th, the Hang Seng Index added 50.96 points, or 0.20 percent, to close at 25,858.88, marking a fourth consecutive advance and reclaiming its highest level in about two months. The monthly meeting of the Communist Party of China Politburo laid out fiscal and financial policy directions to boost domestic demand, and policy hopes underpinned the market. On the other hand, weakness in US semiconductor shares, higher crude oil prices, and rising long-term US yields weighed, sending the Hang Seng Tech Index 1.3 percent lower against the trend. Among individual stocks, New Oriental Education & Technology Group surged 18.8 percent after reporting a 776 percent jump in quarterly profit, while banking, insurance, and consumer sectors were firm. In contrast, semiconductor and mobile-device-related names fell sharply.
