The company was formerly known as Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare-Earth (Group) Hi-Tech Co., Ltd. and changed its name to China Northern Rare Earth (Group) High-Tech Co., Ltd. in January 2015. Founded in 1961, it is headquartered in Baotou, China.

Northern Rare Earth announced that the trading price for rare earth concentrate in the third quarter of 2026 has been adjusted to 38,565 yuan per ton excluding tax, on a dry basis with REO at 50 percent. For every 1 percent increase or decrease in REO, the tax-exclusive price will change by 771.30 yuan per ton. The company previously announced a second-quarter price of 38,800 yuan per ton, implying a quarter-on-quarter decline of 0.62 percent based on this estimate. The pricing was approved at the company's 14th general manager's office meeting of 2026, and was calculated based on the rare earth concentrate pricing method and the rare earth oxide prices in the second quarter of 2026.
