"Take 3 days off for a 13-day break" ignites dual-holiday travel boom, A-share tourism sector strengthens

On August 20, the A-share tourism sector strengthened amid intraday volatility. Nanjing Commercial & Tourism and Cuivei Co. hit their daily limit up, while Baiona Qiancheng, Jiuhua Tourism, Jinpu Landscape, Ciwen Media, and Shaanxi Tourism also rose in tandem. On the news front, according to the State Council General Office's notice on holiday arrangements for 2026, the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday runs from September 25 to 27, a total of 3 days with no adjusted working days, while the National Day holiday runs from October 1 to 7 with adjusted working days, a total of 7 days. The two holidays are separated by only 3 working days. If consumers apply for leave during those 3 working days, they can piece together a super-long 13-day holiday from September 25 to October 7. Entering August, the "take 3 days off for a 13-day break" leave strategy quickly gained momentum in the tourism consumption market, directly driving a rapid rise in search and booking interest for long-haul and outbound travel. Inquiry volumes for related products on online travel platforms such as Ctrip, Tongcheng, and Tuniu rose noticeably. According to data from Qunar, as of August 10, booking interest for popular domestic cities during the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays grew 30% year on year, while interest in popular outbound cities grew more than 50%. According to data from U-Tour, as of August 12, travel products for the National Day golden week had already accounted for 75% of customer intake, with the pace of bookings significantly faster than the same period last year, and overall trip registrations up 70% year on year. According to big data from the official civil aviation direct sales platform Umetrip, as of August 11, bookings for domestic flight tickets with travel dates from September 25 to October 7 exceeded 1.71 million, up about 7% year on year, while bookings for international and regional flight tickets exceeded 1.28 million, up about 11% year on year. BOC International analysis pointed out that this year's Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays are only 3 days apart, and some consumers have already pieced together a long holiday through the "take 3 days off for a 13-day break" approach. A longer holiday period is expected to help unleash demand for long-haul and cross-border travel. In the first half of 2026, domestic residents made 3.463 billion trips, an increase of 178 million over the same period last year, up 5.4% year on year, with total travel spending reaching 3.21 trillion yuan, up 2.0% year on year. With State Council approval, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism recently issued the 15th Five-Year Plan for building a strong tourism nation, proposing that by 2030 domestic residents will make 8.3 billion trips, total domestic travel spending will reach 7.7 trillion yuan, and inbound tourism will reach 190 million visits with total spending exceeding 150 billion US dollars.

China tourism price wars threaten rare bright spot in consumer spending

China's domestic tourism market is weakening faster than expected, clouding one of the few bright spots in the country's sluggish consumer economy. Hilton China now expects revenue per available room to fall by low single digits this year, worse than earlier expectations for a flat performance, after swinging from 1.3% growth in the first quarter to a 2.2% fall in the second quarter. Across China, hotel RevPAR has tumbled 6% year-on-year through late July, following a 1% drop in June, according to Smith Travel Research data cited by Goldman Sachs. A three percentage point drop in occupancy along with a 1% decline in average daily rates versus a year ago dragged down revenue. The travel sub-index of the consumer price index dropped by 0.6% in June from the prior month, with China's chief statistician pointing to sharp price drops in hotel rates and airfares. Inbound travel offers modest support, with overseas visitors accounting for 12% to 13% of total tourism spending, and Hyatt's Greater China RevPAR rose 7.2% year-on-year in the second quarter, driven by leisure luxury.

Trip.com Group Faces ¥5.20 Billion Antitrust Fine and Operational Overhaul

Trip.com Group Limited was fined ¥5.20 billion by China's State Administration for Market Regulation for abusing its dominant position in the domestic online hotel-booking market, including using platform rules and technical measures to secure exclusive lowest-price deals with certain hotels, and was ordered to refund withheld booking deposits. The company has accepted the regulator's decision and will implement rectification measures aimed at strengthening governance and supporting sustainable development of the travel industry. A class action lawsuit filed in the US in March 2026 alleges misleading disclosures around regulatory and monopolistic risks, adding legal and compliance uncertainty. The fine and required operational changes raise questions about whether Trip.com's hotel bargaining power will weaken enough to materially drag on growth or margins, potentially affecting its investment narrative.

Citi Cuts Trip.com Target to $64 as Q2 Guidance Disappoints

Citi analyst Brian Gong cut his price target on Trip.com Group to $64 from $82 while maintaining a Buy rating, citing disappointing second-quarter 2026 guidance. Trip.com projected revenue growth of just 3% to 8%, a sharp deceleration from the 17% year-over-year growth posted in the first quarter of 2026. Gong noted that elevated fuel costs are suppressing travel demand, feeding directly into the weaker revenue outlook. Benchmark analyst Fawne Jiang also lowered his target to $65 from $72, keeping a Buy rating, and reduced fiscal 2026 forecasts due to a cautious near-term demand outlook and limited visibility in the second half.

Wolfe Research upgraded Chevron to Outperform from Peer Perform with a $210 price target, citing incremental production options that extend the free cash flow growth outlook beyond 2030. Needham upgraded Silicom to Buy from Hold with a $60 price target after the company announced material progress with a new AI inference customer, resulting in initial production orders. TD Securities upgraded BCE to Buy from Hold with an unchanged price target of C$37, calling the 13% selloff since early June unjustified and an attractive entry point. On the downgrade side, Goldman Sachs cut SkyWest to Neutral from Buy with a price target of $108, down from $126, citing downside risk to block hours. Susquehanna downgraded Greenbrier to Neutral from Positive with an unchanged price target of $52, pointing to a lack of visibility on improved builds and tariffs. RBC Capital also initiated PSEG with a Sector Perform rating and $81 price target, noting the New Jersey regulatory overhang is potentially alleviating but wanting more clarity. KeyBanc initiated Waystar with an Overweight rating and $30 price target, seeing a large valuation disconnect given the company's high-margin growth story with large moats.

US stock futures pointed higher Friday morning, with E-mini S&P 500 contracts up about 0.7% and Nasdaq-100 futures ahead more than 2%, as investors weighed three key signals. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge, PCE for May, is expected to run hotter, potentially keeping interest rates higher for longer. Among top movers, Sandisk surged 21.97% after Citi raised its price target citing tight NAND conditions, Micron Technology jumped 15.74% on a strong earnings beat and higher guidance, and Applied Materials climbed 13.42% after launching new AI-focused chipmaking tools. On the downside, Trip.com Group declined 12.55% after multiple analysts cut price targets following softer Q2 revenue guidance, Honeywell Aerospace fell 9.79%, and Strategy dropped 9.35% despite announcing a new customer deployment.
