Albemarle swings to profit, raises 2026 sales outlook

Albemarle Corporation swung to a profit in the second quarter of 2026 and issued full-year guidance calling for US$5.7 billion to US$6.0 billion in net sales. The company reported sales of US$1,743.31 million and net income of US$479.96 million, with basic earnings per share of US$3.72 compared with a loss per share of US$0.16 a year earlier. Albemarle also guided for 225 to 235 kilotons of lithium carbonate equivalent volumes in 2026, citing operational friction including the Talison CGP3 fire delay partly offset by higher Wodgina output. The results support a near-term earnings recovery catalyst, though prolonged low lithium pricing and oversupply remain the most immediate risk.

Power Metals Advances North America's Only Cesium Project Toward 2027 Production

Power Metals is advancing what it describes as North America's only cesium project toward a targeted early 2027 production start at its Case Lake property in northeastern Ontario. The company has completed extensive drilling, established a maiden resource, and moved into permitting as it pursues a quarry-style operation focused on high-grade pollucite mineralization that has returned intervals grading more than 20% cesium oxide. Albemarle holds the cesium offtake and has provided a US$5 million prepayment, while former Albemarle exploration executive Eric Schrimsher has joined Power Metals' Cesium Advisory Committee. The project spans approximately 11,000 hectares with over 24,000 metres of drilling completed, and the company says there is currently no operating source of high-grade cesium production anywhere in the world.

Albemarle Q2 2026 EBITDA more than doubles to $858 million

Albemarle Corp reported second-quarter 2026 net sales up 31% year-over-year and adjusted EBITDA more than doubling to $858 million, with enterprise EBITDA margin expanding to 49%. The company generated $710 million in cash from operations and $638 million in free cash flow, achieving over 80% operating cash conversion. Global lithium demand grew 45% year-over-year through May, driven by strong stationary storage and improving EV growth, with inventories at near-record lows. Albemarle raised its full-year outlook for specialties and is on track to hit the high end of its cost productivity target of $100-150 million. However, a June 9 fire at the Greenbushes CGP3 plant delayed the ramp-up to full production until Q1 2027, leading the company to expect energy storage sales volumes for 2026 to be flat to down 4% year-over-year.

Albemarle Adds Former Vale CEO Eduardo Bartolomeo to Its Board

Albemarle Corporation has appointed former Vale S.A. CEO Eduardo Bartolomeo to its Board of Directors, assigning him to the Audit & Finance and Safety, Sustainability, Operations & Capital Committees. The move brings extensive mining, logistics, and operational leadership experience to the company as it focuses on its Energy Storage segment, where analysts expect net sales to reach about US$1.19 billion for the upcoming quarter, a sharp year-over-year increase. Bartolomeo's background could support execution on supply, costs, and global operations, though the appointment itself is not seen as a material near-term catalyst. Albemarle Stock Drops 25.5% in a Month Amid Falling Lithium Prices

Albemarle Corporation shares have fallen 25.5% over the past month, underperforming the Zacks Chemical - Diversified industry and the S&P 500. The decline is driven by falling lithium market prices, which have pulled back due to slowing electric vehicle demand in China, an inventory glut, and prospects of increased supply from mine restarts and capacity additions. China's battery giant CATL has reportedly secured a safety production permit to resume operations at its Jianxiawo lithium mine, while Mineral Resources has announced the restart of its Bald Hill lithium mine in Western Australia. Despite the near-term pressure, Albemarle is well-placed to benefit from long-term growth in the battery-grade lithium market, with lithium demand expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 10-20% from 2025 to 2030. The company delivered roughly $450 million in cost and productivity improvements for full-year 2025 and expects additional improvements of $100-$150 million in 2026. Albemarle's operating cash flow was around $1.3 billion in 2025, and it paid down $1.3 billion of outstanding debt in March 2026. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings is currently pegged at $13.06, suggesting a year-over-year increase of 1,735.2%. Zacks Investment Research advises investors to bet on this Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) stock now, citing solid earnings growth prospects.

Chile's lithium exports nearly triple in first half on rising prices and strong demand

The Chilean government announced on the 8th that lithium exports in the first half of this year surged to nearly three times the level of the same period last year. Lithium export revenue reached 3.2 billion dollars in the first half, a 34.4 percent increase from the full-year export figure for 2025. Rising prices and robust global demand driven by electric vehicles, energy storage, and artificial intelligence-related technologies provided a boost. Total mining exports in the first half rose 20.4 percent to 36.9 billion dollars, with lithium carbonate leading the growth in lithium exports, followed by lithium sulfate and lithium hydroxide. Chile currently has only two lithium producers, Sociedad Química y Minera and US-based Albemarle, and the government is seeking to expand the sector through state-to-state partnerships and privately operated projects.

Albemarle Tightens Costs and Sells Assets to Refocus on Energy Storage

Albemarle is sharpening its focus on energy storage by cutting capital spending, idling higher-cost assets, and divesting non-core operations. The company's Q1 2026 results showed higher sales, a return to profitability, and stronger free cash flow that funded meaningful debt reduction. Analysts have upgraded earnings estimates, and the stock's fair value is projected at $212.74, a 56% upside to its current price. Albemarle's narrative projects $6.7 billion in revenue and $1.9 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 6.8% yearly revenue growth and a roughly $2.3 billion earnings increase from a current loss of $399.6 million. Rising lithium demand for data center battery storage supports the catalyst, though prolonged lithium oversupply and pricing pressure remain key risks.

Albemarle Stock May Be 45% Undervalued Following Citi Upgrade

Lithium producers see battery storage as primary growth driver, offsetting EV slowdown

Lithium producers are growing more optimistic about a market recovery as accelerating demand for battery storage systems helps offset a slowdown in electric vehicles, according to comments made at the Fastmarkets Global Lithium, Battery, and Critical Materials Conference in Las Vegas. Fastmarkets CEO Raju Daswani said the period of market overcorrection is over and that energy storage has become a primary driver of growth, with lithium demand for battery storage systems growing at 40% annually. Albemarle's chief commercial officer Eric Norris noted steady growth for battery storage, in contrast to lumpy EV demand, and highlighted that grid storage is much more evenly distributed around the world. Rio Tinto's head of aluminum and lithium, Jérôme Pécresse, said lithium demand in the next two years will be much more balanced between EVs and energy storage.

UBS says lithium bears are watching the wrong number

UBS argues that lithium bears are focused on the wrong metric, as the market’s binding constraint is spodumene feedstock, not total tonnes of supply. Wood Mackenzie’s cautious view hinges on saturating China EV sales and a supply response to higher prices, but UBS counters that refining capacity in China runs ahead of mine output, keeping spodumene volatile and headline supply figures misleading. UBS’s recent China feedback was more bullish than expected, with battery output outpacing EV growth on storage and exports, and a pullback in GFEX futures was driven by confusion over ESS shipment data rather than real demand softening. Near-term forces include a reduction in China’s battery export rebate from 9 percent to 6 percent in April 2026 and its elimination by January 2027, which pulls demand forward, while CATL’s lepidolite mine remains offline with a potential H2 2026 restart of around 40,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent. UBS stays overweight with Buy ratings on Liontown, IGO, Mineral Resources, Albemarle, POSCO, and Patriot Metals.
