Blackbaud Institute Research Finds Only 10% of Social Impact Organizations Are Using AI Effectively

New research from the Blackbaud Institute reveals that while 85% of social impact professionals report using AI at work, only about 33% believe their organization is using it very effectively, and just 10% qualify as AI-Adaptive organizations that have moved beyond experimentation to systemic, governed AI use. The report identifies four key gaps: an effectiveness gap where individual use does not translate to organization-wide impact, an infrastructure gap with only 50% using paid or enterprise AI tools, a data-readiness gap with fewer than 20% rating their data health as excellent, and a transparency gap where 76% of donors want to know how AI is used but only 26% of organizations disclose it. AI-Adaptive organizations save $621 per employee per week using AI, compared to the average of $500, and reinvest those savings into revenue growth, donor retention, and staff productivity. Blackbaud has also convened the AI Coalition for Social Impact and will launch a free certification program this summer to help organizations improve AI maturity.
