Trump proposes 20% fee on Hormuz transit, drawing IMO rebuke

President Trump declared the U.S. would act as the 'Guardian of the Hormuz Strait' and charge a 20% fee on all transiting cargo to cover security costs, prompting the International Maritime Organization to state there is no legal basis for mandatory tolls to transit a strait. The announcement follows escalating clashes in which Iran has targeted commercial vessels and vowed to impose its own fees for passage, while the U.S. has conducted airstrikes against Iranian installations. The IMO, the U.N. body overseeing global shipping safety, clarified that freedom of navigation is guaranteed under customary international law, which the U.S. has historically recognized. The proposed fee marks a shift toward transactional foreign policy, raising concerns that allies may seek alternative security arrangements and that other powers could assert similar claims in contested waterways.

CMB.TECH sells two Suezmaxes for 100.5 million USD capital gain

CMB.TECH has sold two Suezmax vessels, the Brest and the Brugge, both built in 2023 with a deadweight tonnage of 156,851 each, generating a capital gain of approximately 100.5 million US dollars. The gain will be recorded in the third quarter of 2026, based on the net sale price and book values, with delivery to the new owner also scheduled for that quarter. CEO Alexander Saverys said historically strong Suezmax valuations created an opportunity to unlock value at an attractive point in the cycle, and the returns will be deployed in line with the company's capital allocation strategy to invest in the continued growth of its diversified maritime group. CMB.TECH is one of the world's largest listed diversified maritime groups with a combined fleet of about 250 vessels across dry bulk, crude oil tankers, chemical tankers, container vessels, and offshore energy vessels.

Fortescue and CMB.TECH sign charter deal for up to 12 ammonia-capable bulkers

Fortescue and CMB.TECH have signed a milestone agreement for the charter of up to 12 ammonia-capable Newcastlemax vessels from Bocimar, the dry bulk division of CMB.TECH. Up to three of the 210,000-dwt vessels will be delivered with dual-fuel ammonia engines and are expected to enter service by the end of 2026, while the remaining nine will be ammonia-ready and can be converted later. If fuelled by green ammonia, the combined fleet could cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 250,000 tonnes a year compared with conventional marine fuels. Fortescue Director Integrated Operations Katie Charuga said the deal represents a practical step towards scaling green ammonia in shipping, building on the company's Green Pioneer demonstration vessel. CMB.TECH CEO Alexander Saverys called the agreement a powerful signal that the sector can decarbonise at scale with determined partners.
