Intuitive Surgical warning on insurance changes hits medical device stocks

Shares of several medical device companies fell after Intuitive Surgical warned that changes to some insurance plans could slow U.S. procedure growth, sparking fears of a sector-wide slowdown. STAAR Surgical dropped 10.1%, Globus Medical fell 4.4%, Integer Holdings declined 4.1%, and Enovis lost 5.1%. The warning suggests that shifting insurance coverage could dampen the number of medical procedures performed in the United States, creating headwinds for the entire industry reliant on steady procedure volumes.

BMO names Intuitive Surgical, Globus Medical, Teleflex as top MedTech picks

BMO Capital Markets has named Intuitive Surgical, Globus Medical, and Teleflex as its highest-conviction picks in the medical technology sector, initiating coverage with Outperform ratings and calling the beaten-down group a buying opportunity. Analyst Vik Chopra noted that MedTech stocks trade roughly 31% below their 10-year relative average, approaching the widest discount to the S&P 500 in a decade, while demand for hospital procedures remains strong. He attributed the weakness to fund flows and policy noise rather than fundamentals, describing the sector as under-owned and under-appreciated with the marginal buyer absent. Intuitive Surgical, his top pick, trades at about a 31% discount to its three-year historical multiple despite having the strongest fundamental profile among peers. Globus Medical was highlighted for sector-leading margin growth partly driven by its Nevro acquisition, and Teleflex was cited for a 2027 earnings inflection not yet reflected in consensus. Price targets were set at $518 for Intuitive Surgical, $94 for Globus Medical, and $159 for Teleflex.

Globus Medical Outperforms Medtronic with Stronger Growth and Higher Upside Potential

Globus Medical and Medtronic have both outperformed the medical device industry over the past year, but Globus Medical shows stronger momentum and higher short-term upside. Globus Medical Q1 beat overshadowed by foreign exchange loss and margin pressure

Globus Medical reported first-quarter results that surpassed analyst expectations for adjusted earnings per share and revenue, but a foreign currency transaction loss highlighted how exchange-rate volatility and rising costs can constrain margin flexibility. The company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of US$3.18 billion to US$3.22 billion, signaling management confidence in demand despite inflation, interest rate uncertainty, and currency headwinds. The earnings beat supports the long-term investment thesis centered on spine and orthopedic demand and profitable growth from robotics, yet the immediate risk remains margin pressure from foreign exchange and costs. Some optimistic analysts project revenue of about US$3.8 billion and earnings near US$684 million by 2029, but the latest headwinds may raise questions about the pace of efficiency gains and integration risks.
