Helium token surges 130% on Texas, Hawaii network expansions
Helium's cryptocurrency more than doubled on Sunday after the decentralized wireless-network operator highlighted new deployments in Texas and Hawai‘i that demonstrate how its technology can supplement conventional cellular infrastructure. HNT surged about 130% by 3:36 p.m. Sunday, following posts from Nova Labs, which does business as Helium, about network installations in Celina, Texas, and Waimea Valley on Oahu. The company said the projects are carrying cellular traffic in places where new towers would be costly, slow to build or environmentally impractical. Before today, HNT had fallen 38%. The announcements offer evidence of real-world adoption, although Helium didn't identify them as the cause of the token's rally. Cryptocurrency markets can be highly volatile, particularly during weekend trading when lower liquidity can magnify price moves. For investors, Helium is essentially a crowdsourced wireless network with a cryptocurrency-based payment and incentive system. Individuals, businesses and local governments can install Helium-compatible access points or adapt existing Wi-Fi equipment to carry traffic from participating cellular carriers. Network operators earn HNT for providing useful coverage and handling data. Carriers pay for network usage through dollar-pegged Data Credits created by burning, or permanently removing, HNT. In theory, greater network use should increase demand for the token and reduce its circulating supply. However, successful installations don't guarantee that HNT's price will rise, and the token remains exposed to speculative trading, changes in issuance and the broader cryptocurrency market. Helium said Celina, one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., is using existing municipal and commercial Wi-Fi infrastructure to improve mobile coverage without building new cell towers. The network is carrying about 100 gigabytes of data a day, with more locations expected to begin operating this fall. The Texas city added more than 12,700 residents in one year, expanding 24.6%, according to Census Bureau estimates cited by Helium. That rapid population growth has created a challenge for traditional wireless carriers because tower planning, permitting and construction can take years. Celina enabled carrier offload on Wi-Fi equipment in locations including the Celina Public Library, the Ralph O’Dell Senior Center and participating downtown businesses. Compatible phones connect automatically when they enter coverage areas, without requiring users to download an app, sign in or change device settings. “Helium let us turn Wi-Fi we already own into coverage our residents’ phones use automatically, without spending a dollar on new towers,” Amy Alexander, Celina’s director of information technology, said in the company’s announcement. Celina joins Redondo Beach and Sausalito in California and New Orleans among the municipalities using Helium to address gaps in cellular coverage. Helium said its network operates across more than 42,000 U.S. locations and serves more than 2.5 million people daily. A separate deployment in Hawai‘i illustrates how the same model can operate in a difficult rural environment. Tasa Hawai‘i, a two-person network-engineering business, installed 14 Helium Plus access points along the three-quarter-mile path connecting the visitor center at Waimea Valley with its waterfall. The 1,800-acre cultural and ecological site previously had little usable cellular coverage after visitors entered the property. Construction of a traditional cellular tower inside the protected valley could have required extensive permitting, environmental and cultural reviews and millions of dollars in investment. Instead, Tasa extended fiber through the property, reused decades-old conduit and placed wireless equipment along the trail. The project took about three months, with much of the work performed after the attraction closed. Tropical weather, moisture, vegetation, storms and vandalism have damaged the equipment several times, requiring repeated repairs. Helium said an average of about 1,206 devices a day connected to the Waimea Valley network during a recent 30-day period. The attraction typically receives 1,200 to 1,300 visitors daily, suggesting the system reaches a large share of its guests. The network uses fast-transition technology to move phones among access points as visitors walk toward the waterfall without interrupting their connections. Tasa also operates a Helium carrier-offload site in downtown Honolulu that handles nearly 600 gigabytes of cellular data daily. The company is considering extending coverage from Waimea Valley toward Waimea Bay, home of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, where large crowds can strain available wireless capacity. The Texas and Hawai‘i projects support Helium’s central proposition: smaller, independently operated access points can fill coverage gaps faster and more cheaply than traditional cell towers. For HNT holders, the critical question is whether projects such as these can expand into sustained, large-scale carrier usage. The weekend rally reflects growing enthusiasm about that possibility, but the size and speed of the move also underscore the token’s considerable speculative risk.
