Natural Resource Partners Q2 Earnings Fall on Soda Ash Weakness

Natural Resource Partners reported second-quarter 2026 earnings that declined from a year earlier, driven by weakness in its soda ash segment. Total revenue and other income fell 4% to $48.11 million, while diluted earnings per common unit dropped 26.6% to $1.85 from $2.52. Net income decreased 26.4% to $25.18 million, and the company posted a $4.98 million net loss in soda ash, reversing a $2.5 million profit, due to lower selling prices and a $4.91 million equity loss from Sisecam Wyoming. Mineral Rights revenue rose 11.4% to $53.02 million, helped by a 34.8% increase in coal sales volume, but segment net income fell 8.7% on higher depreciation. The board declared a $0.75-per-unit distribution, and management expects to retire all debt before year-end and significantly increase the quarterly distribution payable in November.

Empire Petroleum Shows Turnaround Signs While Natural Resource Partners Faces Soda Ash Woes

Empire Petroleum Corporation and Natural Resource Partners L.P. present contrasting investment cases within the energy sector. Empire Petroleum is showing operational improvement, with reactivated Texas gas wells boosting production approximately 45% from the fourth-quarter 2025 level and field compression capacity expanded by more than 500%. The company also strengthened its balance sheet by raising roughly $10 million in a rights offering and eliminating about $5 million of debt. In contrast, Natural Resource Partners continues to struggle with severe oversupply in the global soda ash market, which has prevented its Sisecam Wyoming operation from distributing cash since the second quarter of 2025 and required a $39.2 million investment in the first quarter to support its financial position. While Empire Petroleum appears to be emerging from a difficult period with multiple catalysts, NRP faces prolonged weakness that could take years to resolve.
