Company pivots to AI startup with new name and CEO, shares surge 40%.

Allbirds announced it is changing its name to Smartbird and appointing Nadia Carlsten as its new CEO, pivoting from an eco-friendly shoe company to an AI startup. Carlsten, previously CEO of AI company DCAI where she partnered with Nvidia to launch an AI supercomputer, replaces Joe Vernachio who became CEO in 2024. The company sold its shoe business and physical assets for $39 million to American Exchange Group in April and now plans to buy, sell, and maintain AI-equipped servers for rental to other tech firms. Allbirds shares surged more than 40% following the announcement, trading at $5.68 in early afternoon trading. Lily Yan Hughes was also named board chair.
