Coinbase Global IncWeak US demand for Bitcoin and ETF outflows reduce trading activity on Coinbase's platform.
Bitcoin's attempt to break above $80,000 has stalled amid inconsistent US demand and a more hawkish Federal Reserve, raising doubts about the sustainability of the recent rally. Inflows into US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs picked up in August but have been uneven, with two days of sizable outflows in the past week. The seven-day average of the Coinbase premium has been negative for over four months, signaling weak American buying pressure. Glassnode reported that the seven-day average ETF intake reached $290 million a day during the rally, but trading activity was subdued compared with previous bull runs. Macro conditions have turned less supportive after Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole speech revived expectations of a rate hike, with the Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for September 15-16. Glassnode estimates long-term holders are targeting the $83,000 to $86,000 range to sell, creating a price ceiling, while analysts suspect much of the rally was driven by short covering. Bitcoin traded around $77,700 in London on Thursday.
