Berkshire Hathaway IncBNSF, a Berkshire subsidiary, receives approval for a $4B rail facility investment, enhancing long-term value.

BNSF Railway has received approval from the Barstow City Council for its planned Barstow International Gateway, a 4,500-acre rail facility on the city's west side. The $4 billion private investment is described as one of California's largest freight infrastructure projects and will feature a rail yard, intermodal facility, and transload warehouses to transfer international containers from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to domestic containers. BNSF expects the shift from road to rail to eliminate approximately 205 million truck miles in 2028, rising to 312 million by 2048, while supporting 62,000 construction jobs and 15,000 long-term operational jobs. The project includes zero-emission cargo-handling equipment, upgraded flood channels, a replacement bridge over the Mojave River, and enhanced road circulation. It is the first transportation-related scheme certified under California's SB 149 legislation and the first project of its type developed by a Class I railroad.
