A senior strategist of the Chinese military has said artificial intelligence and big data will be at the heart of modern warfare, enabling commanders to assess situations and make decisions on the battlefield in real time. Major General Zhu Xiaoqian, president of the PLA Army Engineering University, wrote in the journal China Military Science that building advanced combat capabilities requires collecting vast amounts of battlefield data, using big data analytics to create a real-time situational picture, and applying algorithms to generate optimal operational plans, while using AI to make the decision-making process more automated. The article reflects the thinking of China's defense establishment after President Xi Jinping called in July for greater application of AI and automation in the defense sector. At the same time, at least seven university laboratories supporting the Chinese military have sought to procure advanced AI chips from Nvidia, including Beihang University and Northwestern Polytechnical University, which are members of the Seven Sons of National Defense group. Major General Zhu also stated that warfare in the cognitive and perceptual domain will become central to advanced combat capabilities, and that China can achieve significant strategic benefits at relatively low investment levels by developing key technologies such as hypersonic weapons, anti-ship missiles, and unmanned systems.
