Apple Inc.CMA proposes forcing Apple to allow steering to cheaper subscriptions, reducing its commission revenue.
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority is proposing to force Apple and Google to let app developers promote cheaper subscriptions and in-app purchases on their own websites, potentially saving millions of iPhone users money. The CMA is considering requiring the tech giants to allow steering, such as displaying alternative prices within apps, which is currently banned under anti-steering provisions. While Apple and Google would still be able to charge developers fees for directing users elsewhere, the CMA said these would be lower than the existing levies of up to 30 percent. Google said it had already made changes to address the concerns, but Apple warned the move risked exposing users to scams. The CMA will decide later this year whether to introduce the proposed changes.
