CME Group IncCME is suing CFTC over approval of perpetual futures, which it opposes; the lawsuit may delay or complicate CME's own plans, and the CFTC's approval of competitors is a regulatory setback for CME.
CME Group will sue the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over its approval of perpetual futures, CEO Terry Duffy told CNBC. Duffy said the lawsuit will be filed on Thursday, and CME confirmed the news in a statement to Reuters. A CFTC spokesperson called the lawsuit frivolous and said the agency looks forward to dismissing it. The CFTC recently gave Coinbase and Kalshi the green light to launch perpetual crypto futures, marking the first time such instruments will be available to U.S. investors through domestic, regulated exchanges. Duffy has criticized the approval process as hasty and warned that the extreme leverage and automatic liquidation models of perpetual futures pose a significant threat to retail investors.
