Coinbase Global IncBase blockchain pivots to DeFi and AI after creator coin failure, but impact on Coinbase is mixed as it may drive future growth but acknowledges past missteps.

Coinbase’s Base blockchain is pivoting away from social adoption projects toward decentralized finance and artificial intelligence after its creator coin strategy failed to gain traction. CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged the year-long push into creator coins did not deliver sustainable growth, stating “We messed up, time to turn the page.” Creator Jesse Pollak, who had championed tokens like his own $JESSE coin that later suffered steep valuation declines, said the network will now adopt a trading-first approach to drive organic demand. Base’s updated March 2026 roadmap prioritizes global markets, cross-border payments, stablecoins, and autonomous AI agents, while the network still holds over $4 billion in DeFi total value locked and more than $12 billion in total on-chain assets.
