Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Class A Common StockShort interest surged to $25B (32% of float) ahead of earnings, with lockup expirations adding selling pressure; stock down 40% from high.

Elon Musk warned that firms holding significant short positions in SpaceX will rarely survive over time, as bearish bets against the newly public company have surged to $25 billion ahead of its first earnings report. Short interest in Space Exploration Technologies Corp has climbed from roughly 40 million shares a month ago to over 206 million shares, representing about 32% of the tradable float, according to S3 Partners. The buildup is driven by a staggered lockup expiration schedule, with the first major wave of 911.5 million shares set for release on August 6, two trading days after the August 4 earnings report. A second conditional tranche of 455.8 million shares appears out of reach given the stock's decline to $123.54, down 40% from its June 16 intraday high of $225.64. Musk pushed back on X, stating that SpaceX will be worth more than Earth if the company achieves its goals.
