Galaxy Digital has pledged up to $5 million to defend Bitcoin against future quantum computers that could crack its digital signature algorithm. The threat centers on the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm used to prove ownership, which a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could exploit to recover private keys from public wallet details. About a third of all Bitcoin already has its public key exposed on the chain, and estimates for when such a computer might exist range from five to 40 years. The main obstacles to mitigating the threat are social and organizational, as Bitcoin Improvement Proposals like BIP-360 and the controversial BIP-361 face challenges in achieving developer consensus.
