An Intel-backed startup called Kepler Computing emerged from stealth with a new memory architecture that it claims can outperform conventional high-bandwidth memory while being produced with existing semiconductor manufacturing tools. Kepler, which counts Intel among its financial backers, plans initial samples later in 2026 and production beginning in 2027, according to a Barron's report on September 10. The threat to Micron Technology is not immediate: Kepler is not shipping commercial volumes today, and Micron already has HBM4 in high-volume production for Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform, with its 36GB HBM4 product offering more than 2.8 TB/s of bandwidth. Micron has secured $22 billion of commitments from 16 strategic customers and expects supply constraints to persist beyond 2027, while hedge fund ownership of the stock rose to 184 funds in the second quarter from 154. For Intel, a successful Kepler architecture would amount to strategic optionality rather than a new earnings engine, and hedge fund ownership of Intel rose to 138 funds from 112 over the same period.
