Summary · why it matters

Itron, Inc. announced the launch of Itron Enterprise Edition Cloud AI, the next evolution of its IEE Meter Data Management platform, built on a modern cloud architecture and integrated with Itron's Intelligent Edge Operating System. The solution gives utilities a standardized way to access, share and act on trusted data across electricity, gas and water operations, reducing data silos and supporting AI-enabled workflows for outage insights, grid visibility, anomaly detection, revenue assurance, forecasting and load management. Utilities can also use Itron Managed Services, under which Itron manages IEE Cloud AI on their behalf, providing ongoing AI-enabled enhancements, security updates and platform maintenance. Don Reeves, senior vice president of Outcomes at Itron, said utilities face rapid data growth and rising regulatory expectations but need a practical path that protects their trusted data foundation. IEE Cloud AI will be available globally in January 2027 for all utilities, with industry standard interoperability and seamless migration for cloud-hosted, customer-hosted and other configurations.

PG&E Commits $73 Million to Community Microgrids in New Funding Phase

PG&E announced a new phase of its community microgrid program backed by US$73 million in funding commitments, disclosing fresh grant agreements and a second round of awards for local clean energy resilience projects. The new funding extends the utility's community microgrid efforts into additional regions that have faced recurring outage and reliability concerns. PG&E operates a large regulated utility through Pacific Gas and Electric Company, supplying electricity and natural gas across northern and central California, and expanding community microgrids ties directly into how this US$29.5b operator manages reliability for its service territory. The clearest early signal to track is how many of the funded microgrid projects actually reach construction and successful operation on schedule, with PG&E securing timely cost recovery approvals from regulators for the roughly US$73 million already authorized and future tranches that could follow this template.

Valmont Industries Raises 2026 Guidance as Shares Trade Below Fair Value

Valmont Industries has raised its 2026 sales and earnings guidance, a move that comes after an 18.6% six-month share rally tied to utility demand and grid modernization. The stock is up 15.3% year to date and has delivered a 1-year total shareholder return of 27.4%, while its 3-year and 5-year total shareholder returns of just over 2x reflect the payoff from the grid modernization theme. Against a last close of $474.64, the most followed valuation narrative pins fair value at about $624.50, implying the shares are 24% undervalued. Valmont's investments in capacity, automation, and AI are expected to unlock between $350 and $400 million in incremental annual revenue and support higher earnings and margins as the multi-year cycle unfolds. The bullish case leans heavily on infrastructure and agriculture cycles, so weaker project spending or sustained material cost pressure could quickly challenge that 24% discount story.
