Meta Platforms and BlackRock announced a partnership to develop a $14 billion data center campus in Texas focused on AI infrastructure. The project is Meta's largest external infrastructure collaboration to date, with Meta contributing land and construction in progress valued at about $2.3 billion and retaining a 20% stake, while funds managed by BlackRock and its partners fund most of the capital and take 80% ownership. The campus is designed to provide 1 gigawatt of compute capacity to support training and deployment of Meta's AI models across its products and services. Meta will maintain operational control and sole initial occupancy, with the campus expected to reach planned capacity by 2028. The partnership allows Meta to scale AI compute without carrying all assets on its balance sheet, potentially serving as a model for future data center funding by large technology companies.
