Microsoft is planning to expand its global data-center footprint to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032, up from about 12 gigawatts today, according to a Bloomberg report. That is more than a threefold increase, and the company says it does not have enough computing capacity to meet demand. Server shortages have reportedly forced Microsoft to turn away some cloud and AI customers, and Temu moved a major cloud deal to Oracle after Microsoft could not provide enough capacity in the regions it wanted. The strain has also hit existing services: GitHub suffered an eight-hour outage in August tied to server constraints, and Microsoft has placed limits on Xbox cloud-gaming usage. Microsoft currently has about 2 gigawatts dedicated to AI, and by 2032 AI capacity is expected to represent roughly one-third of the planned 38-gigawatt footprint.
