Microsoft plans to more than triple its global data center capacity to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032, up from about 12 gigawatts currently, Bloomberg News reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the plans. The roadmap covers Microsoft-owned and leased facilities but excludes computing capacity rented from so-called neocloud providers such as Coreweave. Microsoft spent $145B on capital expenditures in its latest fiscal year as it expands computing infrastructure to meet demand for artificial intelligence and cloud services, and the company has faced capacity constraints that limited its ability to take on some AI and cloud business. In July, CEO Satya Nadella said the company is bringing capacity online faster than ever and finding ways to make existing hardware more efficient and thus more profitable. The plans could change as data center projects take years to develop and technology and customer demand evolve, Bloomberg reported.
