Moderna IncFirst phase III win for mRNA cancer therapy, driving shares up 177%.
Moderna and Merck announced positive phase III results for their personalized mRNA cancer therapy intismeran autogene in high-risk melanoma, sending Moderna shares up 177% and adding more than $44 billion to its market capitalization. The INTerpath-001 study met its primary endpoint of recurrence-free survival and a key secondary goal of distant metastasis-free survival in patients treated with intismeran plus Merck's Keytruda, though no specific numbers were disclosed. The companies said the results represent the first positive phase III readout for an individualized neoantigen therapy and an mRNA-based cancer therapy, and they plan to engage with regulators on potential filings. Merck shares closed about 13% higher, while BioNTech rose 22% as investors saw validation for mRNA oncology platforms. Moderna and Merck are testing intismeran across nine phase II and phase III studies in other cancers including non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer, and renal cell carcinoma.
