Novo Nordisk A/SLaunch of first once-weekly basal insulin Awiqli in US, a product innovation that may support revenue despite modest impact.
Novo Nordisk has launched Awiqli, the first once-weekly basal insulin for adults with type 2 diabetes, in the United States following FDA approval in March and nationwide availability in August. The therapy reduces basal insulin injections from seven to one per week, offering a more convenient alternative to daily dosing. The launch comes as Novo Nordisk seeks to diversify its diabetes franchise amid slower growth and pricing pressure on its core GLP-1 products Ozempic and Wegovy, and intensifying competition from Eli Lilly. Awiqli is already approved in the EU and 13 additional countries, and its U.S. commercial success will depend on physician adoption, patient uptake, and reimbursement coverage. While the new insulin may provide incremental revenue support, its impact is expected to remain modest relative to Novo Nordisk's much larger GLP-1 franchise.
