Novo Nordisk A/SNovo's oral Wegovy marketing application accepted in China, a regulatory milestone toward approval.
Novo Nordisk has moved one step closer to bringing its oral Wegovy treatment to China after the country's drug regulator accepted the company's marketing application, opening a potential route into a market where GLP-1 weight-management sales could reach 30 billion yuan, or about $4.46 billion, within five to seven years, according to J.P. Morgan's head of China healthcare research, Yang Huang. The filing is an early regulatory milestone, not a final approval, and Novo has declined to provide a timeline for a decision. An oral version could help Novo reach patients who avoid injections, and the pill has already been approved in the United States and Britain, with a US launch earlier in 2026. However, Eli Lilly submitted its Chinese application for oral orforglipron at the end of 2025 and could launch as early as 2026, while Novo, Lilly, Pfizer, and Innovent Biologics already compete with injectable GLP-1 products in China. The 30-billion-yuan projection is an analyst forecast for the entire market, not an estimate of Wegovy's future sales, and the treatment's commercial contribution will depend on regulatory approval and competition in a crowded field.
