Novo Nordisk A/SPositive phase III results for semaglutide in pediatric obesity
Novo Nordisk announced positive results from its phase III STEP Young study, showing that once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide, combined with lifestyle changes, significantly reduced body mass index in children aged six to under 12 with obesity. After 68 weeks, 40.4% of treated children were no longer classified as obese, compared with none in the placebo group, and more than 85% had severe obesity at baseline. The safety profile was consistent with prior studies, and detailed data will be presented at the Obesity Society's annual meeting in November. Novo Nordisk's semaglutide-based medicines, including Wegovy and Ozempic, continue to drive growth, with obesity care sales up 20% year over year in the first half of 2026. The company faces rising competition from Eli Lilly and other biotechs developing GLP-1 therapies.
