Novo Nordisk A/SNovo Nordisk launches a cheaper generic version of Ozempic in South Africa, expanding access and potentially capturing more market share.

Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has announced it will launch a more affordable authorized generic of its diabetes drug Ozempic in South Africa later this month, in partnership with Swiss peer Acino. The medicine uses the same active ingredient, semaglutide, as Ozempic and will go on sale on July 27. The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority has registered it as the only approved generic version of semaglutide in the country. Sarah Norcross, general manager of Novo Nordisk South Africa, confirmed that the type 2 diabetes treatment, branded Extensiol, will be cheaper than the originator brand of semaglutide. Pricing will be announced next week.
