CME Group IncCME plans to launch compute futures tied to Silicon Data's benchmark, expanding its derivatives offerings.
Andreessen Horowitz-backed startup Ornn raised a $33 million seed round to build a marketplace for trading computing power as a commodity, similar to oil futures markets. The company aims to create financial infrastructure for the AI industry, where Goldman Sachs estimates $7.6 trillion will be invested globally in compute, power, and data centers between 2026 and 2031. Ornn's platform allows lenders to benchmark and buyers and sellers to hedge, and it has already integrated with Bloomberg Terminal for GPU price discovery. Pending regulatory approval, the Intercontinental Exchange plans to launch GPU compute futures tied to Ornn's pricing index, while CME plans compute futures tied to Silicon Data's benchmark. Ornn operates under a de minimis exemption and does not work with Chinese AI labs, according to its CEO.
