Rocket Lab has revealed a new payload fairing design for its upcoming Neutron rocket, nicknamed the Hungry Hippo, which keeps the nose cone attached to the first stage throughout the mission. The two fairing halves are hinged to the top of the booster and swing open to release the second stage and payload before snapping shut in about 1.5 seconds, allowing the entire structure to return to Earth with the first stage for reuse. This approach could eliminate the cost of recovering or replacing the fairing, one of the most expensive parts of the rocket, and also enables a lighter second stage that can carry more payload to orbit. Neutron is designed to lift 13,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit using nine Archimedes engines, but its first launch has been delayed to late 2026 and the system has yet to fly. Rocket Lab remains unprofitable while funding the development, and the technology's true impact will depend on a successful first flight and recovery.
