SK Hynix IncSurge in semiconductor demand drives record exports, benefiting SK Hynix as a key producer.
South Korea's export value this year has reached 709.4 billion US dollars, surpassing the previous annual record of 709.3 billion US dollars set in 2025, driven by the globally surging demand for semiconductors used in artificial intelligence (AI). The Korea Customs Service expects exports to rise to 1 trillion US dollars per year by early December, making South Korea the fourth country in the world to achieve this, following the United States, China, and Germany. The main driver is semiconductor exports, with chip exports increasing by 169.6% year-on-year during January-August to reach 281 billion US dollars, accounting for 41% of total export value. South Korea is the production base for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which have benefited from rising chip prices. However, exports of passenger cars, the second-largest export item, fell by 4% in the first eight months of this year, while exports to China increased by 76% and to the United States by 57%.
