Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Class A Common StockSpaceX joining Nasdaq-100 triggers $4.3B forced passive buying, boosting demand for its shares.

SpaceX is set to join the Nasdaq-100, forcing index funds tracking the benchmark to buy an estimated $4.3 billion of its shares. More than $800 billion in assets directly track the Nasdaq-100, with over half in the Invesco QQQ ETF, and JPMorgan estimates the forced purchases will hit before SpaceX officially enters the composite. Only 281 million of SpaceX's 7.57 billion shares are publicly traded, creating a collision between the massive passive bid and an extremely thin float. Nasdaq fast-tracked the inclusion after SpaceX cleared the top-40 market-cap threshold, just weeks after its June 12 IPO at $150 per share. SpaceX's weight in the index will initially be less than 1%, spreading the required selling across other constituents with minimal impact.
