Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Class A Common StockRecord IPO and market cap surge to $2.5 trillion

Space Exploration Technologies saw its market capitalization reach $2.5 trillion after its initial public offering, which became the largest ever by raising $85.7 billion following the exercise of an overallotment option. The stock surged 19% on its first trading day and added another 19% on its second day. The company's connectivity business, Starlink, generated $11.4 billion of its $18 billion in total revenue last year, while overall the company posted a loss of $4.9 billion due in part to $12 billion in capital expenditures in its AI unit. Starlink has grown to more than 10 million subscribers as of March, up from 2.3 million in 2023. Analysts note that while investor excitement around space, AI, and connectivity could drive near-term momentum, the company's long-term goals depend heavily on unproven technology, making the stock suitable only for aggressive investors.
