RWE Approves 400MW Battery Storage System at Moerdijk
RWE has taken a final investment decision to build a 400MW/1.1GW-hour battery storage system at its Moerdijk power station in Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands. Construction is expected to begin shortly, with commissioning scheduled for the second quarter of 2028. The installation, comprising 208 lithium-ion battery containers, is designed to supply grid support equivalent to the evening peak demand of around 500,000 households for up to three hours, and will connect to the Dutch national electricity grid using existing infrastructure at the Moerdijk site. Under an agreement with transmission system operator TenneT, the battery will manage electricity flows and could free additional grid capacity for users currently on waiting lists, with TenneT and regional grid operator Enexis set to assess the project's impact in a broader congestion management review planned for December 2026. The site already hosts a smaller synthetic inertia battery of 7.5MW/11MW-hours connected to the continental European grid, and the project is linked to the 795MW OranjeWind offshore wind development, a joint initiative by RWE and TotalEnergies. RWE Generation SE CEO Nikolaus Valerius called the battery a major milestone for reliable power supply and grid relief in Noord-Brabant, noting it can absorb surplus electricity within seconds. RWE currently operates two battery storage systems in the Netherlands, including a 35MW/41MWh installation at Eemshaven, and globally runs battery systems totalling approximately 1.7GW with 3GW under construction.
Castillo Engineering Hires Two Vice Presidents to Scale Utility Solar and Storage
Castillo Engineering has appointed Aaron Carrillo as Vice President of Operations and Devin Radovich as Vice President of Sales and Marketing to lead its next phase of growth in utility-scale solar and energy storage engineering. The two previously worked together at Renewable Energy Systems Americas, a partnership the Maitland, Florida firm says will accelerate its scaling of utility-scale engineering capacity. Carrillo, who served six years in the Arizona Army National Guard and earned his engineering degree from ASU, spent over a decade scaling engineering organizations at Tesla and EVS; at Tesla he grew his own PV and BESS team from 25 to 70 designers, and at EVS he helped expand the engineering team from 20 to 60 employees while raising utility-scale project throughput from 3-5 projects per year to 20-30 per year. Radovich brings 30 years of construction and energy experience, including nearly 15 years in renewables, and has developed and delivered nearly 3 GW of solar, wind, battery storage, and transmission projects. At RES, the pair championed black steel piles in place of galvanized steel on one utility-scale project, saving more than $7 million and cutting lead times in half.

Covenergo and Delta Capacity Start Building 125MW AKKU One BESS in Finland
Covenergo and Delta Capacity have begun construction on the AKKU One battery energy storage system project in Lapinlahti, Finland, a stand-alone battery with 125MW of capacity and 300MWh of energy storage. The companies expect to commission the facility in the fourth quarter of 2027. AKKU One was acquired as a ready-to-build asset from Helios Nordic Energy, with Covenergo holding majority ownership and Delta Capacity serving as engineering, procurement and construction management contractor, responsible for offtake agreements, construction delivery and long-term asset management. Rejlers is providing technical project support, Sungrow will supply the battery system under a 1GWh framework agreement signed earlier this year, NYAB is conducting balance of plant works, Ampner is handling grid connection studies and compliance, and GreenPowerMonitor will provide energy management and supervisory control and data acquisition systems. Once operational, the project is expected to deliver flexibility services to the Finnish electricity network, including frequency regulation and balancing, as the country expands its wind and solar generation; for Delta Capacity, AKKU One is its second BESS project in Finland, following the 70MW/160MWh Ånge BESS completed in Sweden earlier this year.
