Alphabet Inc Class CAlphabet raised its capital spending forecast, disappointing investors despite beating earnings estimates.
Stocks moved sharply lower on Thursday as disappointing earnings from Tesla and Alphabet triggered a broad sell-off. The Nasdaq dropped 566.81 points, or 2.2 percent, to 25,124.09, while the S&P 500 fell 87.34 points, or 1.2 percent, to 7,411.62, and the Dow lost 499.20 points, or 1 percent, to 51,719.38. Tesla shares plummeted 13.4 percent after reporting weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings and a surge in capital spending, while Alphabet tumbled 7 percent despite beating estimates, as it raised its capital spending forecast. A nearly 6 percent spike in U.S. crude oil futures above $90 a barrel, driven by Houthi claims of attacking Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, added to selling pressure. In economic data, initial jobless claims unexpectedly fell to 187,000, the lowest since September 1969.
