Tesla and BYD both posted sharp gains in European Union new-car registrations in May, intensifying their battle in the region's electric-vehicle market. Tesla sold 21,767 vehicles, lifting its market share to 2.3% from 0.9% a year earlier, while BYD's share reached 2.7%, up from 1.1%. Overall EU new passenger car registrations rose 3.2% to 955,013 units, with battery-electric vehicles accounting for one-fifth of the total, up from 15.3% a year ago. Hybrid-electric models held the largest market portion, and the combined share of petrol and diesel cars continued to shrink. For the first five months of 2026, EU registrations increased 4.0%, driven by growing electric and hybrid adoption.
