Tesla IncTesla's negative free cash flow and high capex for AI infrastructure raise financial concerns.
Tesla and SpaceX are investing $16.8 billion in Terafab, a massive Texas semiconductor complex that will rely on natural-gas power plants rather than Tesla's solar business, according to comments made by the project's lead developer at a public meeting. The 100-million-square-foot facility is designed to produce AI chips for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercabs, as well as SpaceX's space-based data centers, and is expected to support more than 1 terawatt of computing capacity. SpaceX plans to build natural-gas power plants and use large battery arrays for the site, which will operate independently of the Texas power grid. The development underscores the growing energy demands of Tesla's AI and robotics ambitions, even as the company reported negative free cash flow of $1.1 billion in the second quarter and full-year capital spending expected to exceed $25 billion.
