SK Hynix IncMemory shortages benefit SK Hynix as a major DRAM supplier with pricing power.
On his final earnings call as Apple CEO, Tim Cook warned that memory chip shortages will persist, driving up costs and pressuring the company's margins under incoming CEO John Ternus. Apple expects to pay even higher memory costs in the September quarter, and management said rising prices could affect iPhone sales and reduce margins beyond the current quarter. CFO Kevan Parekh projected September-quarter margins of 46.5%, down from 48.1% in the June quarter, citing memory as the primary driver. Apple has tested DRAM chips from China's CXMT and is lobbying for broader use, but CXMT has already reached its annual production capacity. With Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron controlling about 94% of the DRAM market and warning the crunch could last through 2027 or 2030, Apple faces a prolonged margin squeeze despite raising device prices.
